The Maryland Act of Toleration, also known as the "Act on Religion," was a law that allowed tolerance to Christians who recognized the Trinity dogma as true.
Approved on September 21, 1649 by the assembly of the Province of Maryland, it was the second law that dealt with the theme of religious tolerance between the British colonies of North America and the first in the world against the discrimination of opinion. The first law concerning religious matters among the North American colonies was instead approved in Rhode Island, 1636, which prohibited religious persecutions, including unitarians. Rhode Island was also the first colony to separate State and Church.
The law became a model for other North American colonies, as later came other laws that ensured tolerance and religious freedom, such as the Holy Experiment in Pennsylvania, and Religion Laws in other colonies like South Carolina, which have been influenced by his example.
This act also influenced the freedom of religion that was later legislated with the creation of the United States of America.
