The Long Walk, which began around 1863, came to be because the United States government wished to re-establish the inhabiting tribes of the Navajo and Apache nations from their original homelands in the Colorado plateu into what would be their new home in the Reservation of Ft. Sumner. The reason for this relocation policies taking effect was that the government believed that the lands of the Navajo, particularly, were rich in resources that could be put to better use if the lands were inhabited by white settlers. The Long Walk is literally the process that took place in the re-location of the Navajo. Many oral histories came out of this resettlement, mostly from survivors of the odyssey into Ft. Sumner, especially those who ran into Arizona and parts of the canyons where the Army was unable to reach them. One of them has to do with the recount of two grandparents to their grandchild about running away into the canyon from the soldiers that were herding them. This allowed them to survive and thus tell their story. The second has to do with the many people who did not go to Hweéldi, which was the name the Navajos gave to Ft. Sumner. They talk particularly about the experience of one man who decided to live at the top of Chaco Canyon mesa. The third of many is the story of the ones who did go to Ft. Sumner, around 8.000, and who lost their lives while those who ran away, about 1000 to 2000 survived in the canyons. In all honesty, I do not know how these people survived. The great canyon and especially the desertic conditions in which some of these Navajo were forced to live and abandon their homes, make people of today question their own ability to survive and adapt to such changes
