Why did more Southern planters think more carefully about how to treat their slaves after the 1810s? The end of the international slave trade made slaves more valuable. The Great Awakening guided them to be more compassionate toward slaves. They were afraid slaves would flee back to Africa. They developed personal ties with their slaves.
