hi there
If you think about it, it’s really easy. You will get (x-1)+x+(x+1).
Because if it’s 3 consecutive numbers and x is in the middle, the one on the left is 1 less than x while the one on the right is 1 more than x. And that turns out to be 3x because the -1 and +1 cancel each other out to give you x+x+x. Example:
You have x cookies in your computer, your friend has one less than you, and your other friend has 1 more than you. How many cookies do you have? This can be addressed with the algebraic expression C=(x-1)+x+(x+1) If you add 1 to both sides to get rid of the -1, you get C-1=x+x+(x+1). So now if you subtract 1 to both sides to get rid of the +1, you get C-1+1=x+x+x. Now simplify. The +1 and -1 cancel out to give you C=x+x+x, and that can be simplified to give you C=3x. So if you have 11 cookies, you can get your total by multiplying by 3. 11•3 = 33. So you all have 33 cookies.
