I would use elimination.

      y = 8x - 9
(-2) y = 4x - 2    (to eliminate this equation needs 4 to equal -8)
    -2y =-8x + 4
    -2y = 4
    y = -2

 substitute y = -2 into first equation to solve for x

y = 8x -9
-2 = 8x - 9
7 = 8x
7/8 = x  (solution is a fraction)
