this is an application of the pythagorean theorem. i reccomend watching a video on it if you need, but to explain it simply if you have a right triang (so a triangle with one right angle) and have it positioned so one side makes a horizontal line and another line makes a vertical line, the third line will be diagonal in comparison in some direction, it doesn't matter which way. we are going to call the horizontal side h, vertical side v and diagonal side d (in most places the letters a b and c will be used, with a and b being one of the horizontal and vertical sides, and c being the diagonal one. ) the theorem is simply
or
. the vertical and horizontal side can be in any order but they have to equal the diagonal.
now, in your case you have the vertical side (the height of the silo) and the horizontal (the length of the shadow on the ground.) while the diagonal part is the tip of the shadow to the silo. from there just plug in and solve. you will have to square root both sides since the first side equals d squared.
