If you have a line given by  

f(x) = mx + b

m is the slope. If the slope is positive, the graph increases from left to right. If the slope is negative, the graph decreases from left to right.

x is the INPUT and f(x) is the OUTPUT. f(x) is a rule that tells you what to do with x. When you put x in, and do what f(x) tells you to do to it, f(x) is what you get out.  

Slope can be found by taking (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1).

If m = 0, f(x) becomes f(x) = b. The term with the x drops out because it's zero no matter what x you plug into it.  

f(x) = b is a HORIZONTAL line. It says that the y coordinate is b, no matter what x I plug in.
