He supposed to plug in y = 12 into the y in the equation to solve for x

Should be:

-14x - 2(2)=24

-14x - 4 = 24

-14x = 28

    x = -2

Explanation: if you plot (9,11) on a grid you can see that the length between 3 and 9 is 6. And the length between 9 and 11 is 6. 6 times 6 is 36. The two length have to be equal to each other because it is a square.
