Quadratics Week 1
Things we have done that you need to be able to do:
1. Examine a quadratic equation in vertex form and be able to describe the transformations
that have been applied to the parent graph y = x^2
2. Given the vertex and another point on the curve, determine the "a" value and the
equation of the parabola.
3. Identify the axis of symmetry and use the axis of symmetry to predict pairs of points with
the same y coordinate.
4. Expand vertex form to obtain standard form.
5. Starting with standard form, complete the square to obtain vertex form.
6. Determine the vertex of a parabola from standard form using the fact that the equation of
the axis of symmetry is always x = -b/2a.
7. Recognize that the y-intercept of a parabola may be obtained from the "c" value of a
quadratic equation in standard form.
8. Solve word problems related to optimal values (i.e. maximum and minimum values found
at the vertex)
