I was always taught to use X (or the same letter) for both, it makes it a little easier to figure out. So X+(X+20)=80. ((X=Math, X+20=dance)) 2x+20=80, subtract 20 from both sides, 2x=60, divide both sides by 2, X=30. Now we substitute that in 30+(30+20)=80. So Pam practiced math 30 minutes and dance 50 :)
