1. The membrane has enzymes that are involved in lipid metabolism.
2. The membrane facilitates recognition and insertion of membrane proteins, also the import of peroxisomal matrix proteins.
3. Membrane proteins also facilitate selective degradation of peroxisomes.
The cells will not be able to metabolize lipids and the rate of energy metabolism would be low. The conversion of the toxic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) is catalyzed by catalase, thus the cell would probably die from not being able to eliminate hydrogen peroxide.
