Should the Nobel Prize in Literature be awarded to Songwriters?
The Nobel prize is one of the more prestigious awards. The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded annually. This award is given to a writer that created the most outstanding piece of literature. In 2016 there was controversy regarding the recipient Bob Dylan, who was a musician. This was the first time the award was given to a musician and not a writer. The Nobel Prize in Literature should have never been given to this songwriter because songwriters will overshine actual writers; songwriters have many other awards they can qualify for, and even though songwriting is very similar and takes talent it is unjust to authors.
If The Nobel Prize in Literature starts to be given to songwriters, the chances of a writer winning the award will decrease even more. The other participants that wrote books could be over shined by a popular songwriter. Now more than ever the new generations are not reading as much. Reading is not as popular as listening to music and pop culture in today’s society. The Noble prize in literature is going to focus more on the popular young songwriter and not the hardworking authors that it was intended to award. In the article from the New York Times in 2016, it demonstrated the importance of the Nobel Prize for writers, “Bob Dylan does not need a Nobel Prize in Literature, but literature needs a Nobel Prize” (North, par. 8). When the committee awarded Bob Dylan the Nobel Prize they chose to recognize an individual who was internationally famous and already praised in another field.
Songwriters have always been recognized and have many awards like Grammys, and many other small awards meant for music, while writers can only get one or two important awards. So imagine if the songwriters start winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, that would leave no awards that show appreciation to writers. Anna North described this scenario of how songwriters already receive enough awards, “He does deserve the many Grammys he has received, including a lifetime achievement award, which he won in 1991. He unquestionably belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, into which he was inducted in 1988...when the Nobel committee gives the literature prize to a musician, it misses the opportunity to honor a writer” (North, par. 1, 3). This shows how songwriters get the appreciation they deserve but will take away from the appreciation writers deserve by getting awarded the Nobel prize of Literature. Although songwriting and writing as an author are similar they are still different.
Songwriting requires talent, time, effort, and skills like those used in writing a beloved novel. All types of writing take time, but they all also should be appreciated in their own way. Being an author requires more time than writing a 3-minute song. It would only make sense to keep giving the award to writers for this feat. The Nobel Prize should not be given to songwriters because of all the appreciation songwriters receive already. By giving the award to only writers it would keep the appreciation to all different types of writers equivalent and no one would overpower someone else causing a more fair and justified award.
Overall it is clear that songwriters are just as talented as authors, but should not be given the Nobel Prize in literature. It has been shown that if songwriters are given this opportunity it negatively affects writers. It has also been shown that songwriters get a lot of appreciation in other awards. Getting the Nobel prize for authors means a lot to the author because of the very small amount of awards that are available for them. Taking everything into account, it is clear that it would only be fair to not include songwriters as nominees for the Noble Prize in literature.
