I believe the role of goverment is to protect the rights of all of it's citizens not to enforce a particular theological or political point of view.
There are universal rights such as life liberty and the persuit of happiness and the universal right to life, all other rights derive from these. These are what a govenment should protect. Often people confuse this with a right to no offense and want the govement to protect this - and here begins the slippery slope.
