Colin Cherry’s experiment’s subjects were tasked to listen to two different speakers at the same time and then try to separate them, only attending to one of them.
The two things the participants commonly failed to notice in Colin Cherry’s experiment’s rejected or unattended message is that they didn’t noticed that the language they heard was actually not English but rather German. Another one is that they were not aware that it was being played backwards, fortunately, there were some that said that it sounded a bit strange.
On the other hand, the two things they noticed in this experiment were firstly, the message was speech and not a non-verbal content (i.e. tone). They were also able to determine when the speaker changed from male to female.
