How does modern science differ from faith?
The main difference that modern science and faith have is their attitude towards evidence. Modern science has a great respect for evidence, and it generally believes that for a claim to be considered true, it should be backed up by concrete evidence. In order to acquire this, it relies on the scientific method.
On the other hand, faith defends the idea of believing in something even when no evidence is available. The power of faith comes from the fact that faith can survive even when everything points to the contrary.
How do these compare in terms of teleological and cause-and-effect explanations?
Modern science, in its search for evidence, has reached the conclusion that the physical world is rules by a series of laws, and that these can be discovered through research and experimentation. Moreover, it places little value on luck or coincidence and instead it tries to show connections and cause-and-effect relationships between natural phenomena.
On the other hand, faith is more accepting of the idea of inexplicable phenomena. It also does not argue that there is a connection between all events. Instead, it justifies most things by appealing to the will of a superior being.
