The concept of representation in Government ensures that the Government acts for the benefit of the people because if they do not, they will be removed by the people because the people have the power to do so by not voting for them.
In a non-representative government however, the Government does not have to be accountable to the people because they do not rule with their consent. They can therefore deny the people their civil liberties with little fear of repercussions and we see this in authoritarian governments around the world.
