President Franklin Roosevelt most likely supported Lawrence Camp in the Senate race against Walter George and Eugene Talmadge in 1938 because he wanted to strengthen support for his “New Deal Policies”.
George seemed to no longer support Roosevelt’s New Deal policies and both George and Talmadge had some popularity in Congress. Roosevelt’s new programs required the cooperation of state governments and he did not believe he would receive the support he needed if George and Talmadge were in office. Lawrence Camp was a well known pro-Roosevelt and New Deal supporter.
