The South was mostly a plantation based economy which meant that they had large farms and was why they felt they needed so many enslaved people.
They also had the advantage of having more experienced military leaders such as General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert Edward Lee. Their presence ensured that the Confederate army was able to withstand a better armed and supplied Union army for years.
The South also had the advantage of miles of coastline that enabled them to for a time, withstand the Union blockade of her ports that were imposed as soon as the Civil war broke out.
