Although King is a respected individual for his part in the movement, clergymen criticize King for the violence that occurs because of his demonstrations and nonviolent tactics against the law. King feels that American blacks have achieved little by using the political channels in the city. King believed that the only option for equality was through demonstration and peaceful protest. 11. Why is King disappointed with the church leaders upon his arrival to Birmingham? King was disappointed with church leaders because of the lack of support received from them. He wanted change in Birmingham and being a Godly man, he thought that the church would be his foundation of support. He was very surprised when he found out they would not speak up in his defense. King was eager to endure any punishment for his views as long as he had support from the church. As he was writing this letter, he mentioned the church, “I hope the church as a whole will meet the challenge of this decisive hour. But even if the church does not come to the aid of justice, I have no despair about the future. I have no fear about the outcome ofour struggle in Birmingham….” King had hope for the church but he does not show any loss of hope for the outcome of Birmingham. Also, stated in the letter was: “I had hoped that each of you would understand. But again I have been disappointed.” King had faith in the church, because the church was supposed to show Christianity and justice, but they let him down.
