The projectile is the basic component of a bullet and shot pellets. Shotguns utilize a shotshell comprising either a single slug an abundant number of small projectiles (shot or pellets), whereas rifles and handguns utilize a cartridge comprising a single projectile (bullet).
EXPLANATION:
The ammunition’s basic components are the primer, powder, case, and projectile(s), while shotshells have an additional component called wad.
•Primer: an explosive chemical mixture that ignites the gunpowder when colliding with a firing pin. Primer may be positioned either in the rim of the case (rimfire) or in the base’s center of the case (centerfire).
•Gunpowder: a chemical compound that burns quickly and transforms into an escalating gas when exploded. The modern smokeless powder will burn gradually when burnt in the open (outside of the case). Black powder is less steady and can be explosive when burned or impacted in the open.
•Case: the container that grasps all the other ammunition gears together. It is often made of brass, copper, steel, paper, or plastic.
•Projectile: the object(s) barred from the barrel. A bullet is a projectile, often containing lead, fired throughout a handgun or rifle barrel. A slug is a solid projectile, often of lead, fired throughout a shotgun barrel. The shot is a group lead, tungsten alloy, steel, or bismuth pellets fired throughout a shotgun barrel.
•Wad: a seal and/or shot container which is made of plastic or paper splitting the powder from the shot or slug in a shotshell. The wad precludes gas from leaking throughout the shot and grasps the shot together as it passes throughout the barrel.
