The autonomic nervous system
Explanation:
The peripheral nervous system consists of two parts, namely; the somatic nervous system, and the autonomic nervous system.
The somatic nervous system is primarily responsible for regulating voluntary body movements as they function in coordinating and carrying of sensory and motor information within nerves and the central nervous system.
The autonomic nervous system, on the other hand, is responsible for controlling and regulating involuntary body functions such as heart rate, digest, breathing and perspiration, of which we have no conscious or voluntary control over.
The autonomic nervous system can be further divided into the sympathetic and the asympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system controls involuntary body functions such as heart rate, breathing when the body is exposed to a threat , while the asympathetic nervous system helps to maintain the normal body functions in the absence of threat or when the threat has passed.
