Many protists live within kinetoplastids which are communities of other microorganisms. Photosynthetic protists that swim or float are phytoplankton. Heterotrophic protists that ingest prey items or absorb small organic molecules are called protozoa .

The result of a brief exposure is sunburn. Prolonged IR exposure induces new blood vessels to form from pre-existing ones in the skin.
