Blue baby syndrome can refer to a number of conditions that affect oxygen transportation in the blood, resulting in blueness of the skin in babies. In babies with low levels of oxygen or mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, the blood can have a blue or purple color, causing cyanosis.

Blue baby syndrome also known as methemoglobinemia, is a blood disorder that occurs due to intake of water which is contaminated with large amount of nitrates. Inside the body nitrates metabolise and  convert to nitrites which then bind with oxy-haemoglobins and convert them to metheglobin.
