In ionic compounds, the charges on the ions are determined by the number of electrons donated to or accepted by each ion.
Ionic compounds are formed when a bond is formed between two atoms as a result of electron donation from one atom and electron acceptance by the other.
Thus, the charge on each ion would depend on the number of electrons donated or accepted. An atom that donates electrons will carry a positive charge with the number of electrons donated while an atom that accepts electrons will carry a negative charge with the corresponding number of accepted electrons.
For example, NaCl is an ionic compound formed by the combination of Na and Cl atoms. Na donated its single valence electron to Cl. Hence, in ionic form, the Na atom who donated an electron would be

Explanation:
El oxigeno molecular es aquel que tiene como valencia el numero -2, en el caso del SO₂ se necesitan dos moleculas de oxigeno para que reaccione con el azufre con valencia +2 y asi equiparar los valores de valencias para que quede 0.
Es decir que el numero de valencia del azufre es +2 y el del oxigeno es -1, (por eso no es molecular)de esta manera si no multiplicamos al oxigeno por dos o no ponemos en claro que serian dos moleculas las que reaccionan el valor de la suma de las dos valencias no nos daria 0.
Entonces para poder solucionar dicho fenomeno en el espacio de abajo a la derecha se le suma un 2 al oxigeno (O₂) y asi el -1 se multiplica con el 2 dando como resultado una valencia total de -2 (para el oxigeno) que da 0 al sumarla con la +2 del azufre.
