Follow these steps to see how the example graph below is created.
Draw the y-axis with appropriate interval based on the data to show changes in potential energy and the x-axis to show the forward progression of the reaction. Label both axes accordingly.
Plot and label the potential energy of the reactants (−380 kJ), the transition state (Ea= –230 kJ), and the potential energy of the products (−570 kJ) using three horizontal dotted lines.
Draw a curve from the reactants dotted line up to the transition state line, and then curve the line down to the potential energy dotted line of the products.
Label the reactants and products with their chemical formulas and the hump as "Transition State."
Use double-headed arrows between the dotted lines of the products and reactants to label the total change in enthalpy (ΔH).
Use double-headed arrows between the dotted lines of the reactants and transition state to label the activation energy.
Subtract the potential energy of the reactants from the activation energy potential energy to determine the total activation energy needed for the reaction.
Subtract the potential energy of the reactants from the potential energy of the products to determine the change in enthalpy.
