After reading the following paragraph, what conclusion most accurately characterizes a police officer’s career? After graduation from the police academy, some police agencies provide police training officer, or PTO, programs. PTO programs focus on many phases of training, each focusing on some aspect of the policing process. Problem-based learning, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork are also emphasized. Throughout a police officer’s career, training continues to occur. Called in-service training, this training helps to sharpen the officer’s skills and improve the quality of police work that an officer can provide to the community. Some of this training covers skills like firearms training or self-defense, but a wide choice of electives can be chosen, as well. These electives include computer and equipment skills, interview and interrogation skills, domestic violence, problem-solving skills. Most police agencies require that their officers participate in in-service training every year. Training can be tailored to the particular needs of the department’s officers, so that the skill set of each officer is developed to meet needs of the community.
