After Captain Cleveland of Salem claimed to have sailed around the world, single-handedly in 1800, there were many other attempts made at solitary ocean crossings. Not all of these attempts were successful. Sailing alone posed many dangers, including the possibility of the boat capsizing, running into harsh weather conditions, and the ever-present danger of the lone sailor falling overboard. In all of these situations, there would be no one to help. Despite the risks, people continued to attempt lone sailing missions. Bernard Colby was one of those brave sailors. In 1882, he set out from San Francisco aboard a 19-foot schooner that he built himself. Colby worked hard, and with limited resources, to build his own ship. He was at sea for more than one hundred days. Unfortunately, a swordfish pierced the hull of his ship, causing him to fail. He was rescued from the water by a passing fishing boat. He never made another attempt at a lone ocean crossing.
