In 1882, he set out from San Francisco aboard a 19-foot schooner that he built himself. Colby worked hard, and with limited resources, to build his own ship. He was at sea for more than one hundred days. Unfortunately, a swordfish pierced the hull of his ship, causing him to fail. He was rescued from the water by a passing fishing boat. He never made another attempt at a lone ocean crossing.
