An introductory paragraph should always include three things: a TAG, a summary, and a claim--in that exact order!

Today, let’s focus on the TAG.

When writing a response to literature, a good way to begin your introductory paragraph is with a TAG (title, author, genre). Adding adjectives to your TAG can also make it more interesting.

For example, E.B. White is the author of the heart-warming, fictional story, Charlotte’s Web.

In your Writer's Notebook, use the following titles, authors, and genres, create TAGs that could be used at the beginning of a response to literature.

L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables, novel

Henry, “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen,” short story with a twist
Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, literary fiction
