From part ii of the novel to kill a mockingbird, pick one paragraph in which the author uses semicolons and in 150-200 words, tell how they are used. (answers should mention that semicolons are either joining two closely connected main clauses, are joining two main clauses using a conjunctive adverb, are used to clarify a long list of phrases with internal punctuation, or are used with a coordinating conjunction because the sentence has lots of internal punctuation.)

To kill a Mockingbird is a novel published in 1960 by Harper Lee and takes place during three years (1933–35) of the Great Depression, in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama. It focuses on Jean Louise Finch (Scout), who a six-year-old who lives with her older brother Jeremy their widowed father Atticus. The following excerpt was taken from the Chapter 12:
"With him, life was routine; without him, life was unbearable."
The semicolon is used because there is a preposition in the sentence, the word "without", which links two closely connected clauses. Also, prepositions are used when establishing a relationship between 2 clauses, like showed in the excerpt. The two clauses are syntactically independent but similar in their semantics. The semicolon gives an evidence of the two widely different perspectives, but they are both about a deep relationship: having or not having someone. It is worth mentioning that usually semicolons are used together with a conjunctive adverb or coordinating conjunction.
