How does the diagram help the text? When you pedal, you force the chain rings to turn. Looking at the close-up of the drivetrain here, you should be able to see the teeth on both the big ring and the cassette. The ring’s teeth fit into the open spaces of the chain and pull it. The chain, in turn, pulls on the teeth on the rear cog and makes the rear wheel rotate. That’s what makes you go forward. You aren’t actually forcing the front wheel to move at all—you could say that it’s just along for the ride.
