- The native Americans had to fight to their native land, where they had developed customs and traditions. Otherwise the settlers of the land were competing to find them a place to cultivate and settle.
- They native Americans had to compete if they didn't want to die easy or just let their "captives" destroy them. We all know in the game of competition rules are broken and morality is less important.
- The natives may have been friendly with the settlers at first and then problems came causing them to have to count the cost of being friendly and now let their natural survival instincts kick in.
On the side of the settlers they may have been vicious as one side of history paints them. Playing friendly to the landowners until they had enough time to put their schemes for territory into action.

The answer to the question: Based on this passage, the reader can conclude that one purpose of Chavez´s speech is to:, would be, C: Urge people to follow in Dr. King´s footsteps in the fight against injustices.
Explanation:
Cesar Chavez, author of this speech, was a Hispanic-American who was born to immigrants in Arizona. His entire life he had to face segregation and harsh treatment from white Americans, just like African Americans. He made it his life´s goal to fight against segregation and mistreatment but not through violence, but rather, through nonviolence, following the examples of Gandhi and Saint Francis of Assisi. He became the founder of the United Farm Workers, in 1962 and he used the inspiration he got from such celebrities as Martin Luther King. Just like King, Chavez believed in the need to fight against racial segregation, and differences between Americans due to this factor, but not through violent acts. When Chavez, in his speech says: "We must learn his lessons and put his views into practice, so that we may truly be free at last," referring to Dr. King, he is urging the American people to overcome their differences, to follow the leadership that was set by Dr. King and fight segregation but not through violent acts. This is why the answer is C.
