Step 1 – check the scene for safety, then see if the person responds to you when you tap them on the shoulder and you shout, “are you okay? ” step 2 – briefly look at the chest for breathing. step 3 – if there is no response, call 9-1-1 or have someone else call. step 4 – if the person is not breathing or gasping, prepare for chest compressions by placing the heel of one hand in the center of their chest. place your second hand over the hand on the chest and lace your fingers together. position your shoulders over your hands, with arms straight and fingers off the chest. step 5 – push hard and fast, at least two inches, and let the chest rise completely. keep your hands on the chest as you raise and lower your body weight. step 6 – keep going without stopping. do not stop until the person is clearly breathing, the situation becomes unsafe, an aed (automatic external defibrillator) device is available, you’re too exhausted to continue, or a trained responder takes over. performing cpr on someone who doesn’t need it can be harmful. never practice compression technique on a human being or living creature. only submissions demonstrating
