Stephen Arthur Douglas was a popular spokes person and a leading politicians during the American Civil wars. He face challenged against Abraham Lincoln. During their campaigning, both Douglas and Abraham Lincoln spoke about several topics including popular sovereignty and slavery.
When slavery became a political issue during the Mexican War, Douglas’s nationalism faced new challenge. He feared that the issue of slavery might bring disrupt , thus he argued for the doctrine of popular sovereignty.
