The correct answer is A) The Dawes Act was passed to make American Indians property owners and to open up more land for white settlers.
The statement that best describes the reasons why the Dawes Act was passed is "The Dawes Act was passed to make American Indians property owners and to open up more land for white settlers."
One of the immediate things that happened when Congress passed the Dawes Act of 1887, was that the United States government divided Native American territories by creating individual plots of land. That was the only way for Native American Indians to become an American citizen: accepting the split of the land. The government wanted to incorporate the Native Indians to the American culture but it was not an a¿easy task. The Native Indians had so ingrained their customs, culture, and traditions. As a result of this Act, almost 90 million acres were sold to white settlers.
