Martin Luther King, Jr., was a leading figure of the African American civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He worked to achieve racial equality and end the practice of racial segregation. King's actions and commitment to nonviolent resistance inspired many other individuals and groups in the civil rights movement to challenge racial segregation through acts of civil disobedience.
