History

The first regular air mail route in the United States was established on 15 May 1918 between New York City and Washington D.C. And was 218 miles long. This service was the the exclusive responsibility of the Post Office until 12 August 1918 when the United States War Department joined the Post Office to furnish the planes and pilots.
