The Framers viewed Congress as the most powerful branch of government. The presidency was designed as "an effectual check" upon the legislature. Yet, the 20th century saw a shift of that institutional balance with increasing executive power and prominence in American politics and governance. How has the presidency changed from the 19th Century going forward? What factors have led to the development and expansion of presidential power in the "modern presidency"? (Hint: in the PowerPoint). Barbara Johns was a young African American civil rights activist in the 1950s. She led her fellow students on a strike at their Virginia high school. They were protesting the bad condition of their school compared to the high school for white students. The strike led to a lawsuit that eventually became one of the court cases in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. The decision in that case led to the end of segregation (the separation of Black and white people) in public schools.
