The Great Sioux War of 1876, also known as the Black Hills War is considered as the last important war between Native Americans and Federal troops. The Battle of the Little Bighorn between forces of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes and the US Army, was the most relevant action of this War. It took place on June 25th and 26th, 1876, along the Little Bighorn River. The combat was an impressive victory for the tribes, who were led by the Lakota war leader Crazy Horse. The US Army, led by Colonel George Custer, suffered a major defeat and Custer, two of his brothers, a nephew, and a brother-in-law all were assassinated. Crazy Horse was fatally wounded a year later and died.
