Answe: Phoenicia is mostly surrounded by mountains.
Phoenicia's geography made land travel difficult for the people living there. The Lebanon Mountains stood to the east of Phoenicia, and Mount Carmel was to the south. These mountains discouraged the Phoenicians from developing strong trade routes by land, so they instead turned west and traded through the Mediterranean Sea.
