The second one.
Overthrow of Queen LiliuokalaniSpanish-American WarAnnexation of HawaiiConstruction of Panama CanalExplanation:
Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown in January 1893 by mostly foreign businessmen when she tried to rewrite the Constitution and give power back to the Hawaiian people.
The Spanish-American War began in April 1898 and lasted till December of the same year and saw the US defeat the Spanish and take over control of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippine Islands.
The Annexation of Hawaii happened in the same year when Congress passed the Newlands Resolution on July 4, 1898.
The Americans needed a way to transport goods from the East coast to Asia that would be cheaper and more effective and so turned to the Panama Canal which was already being constructed but had seen its progress stalled. They took over construction in 1904 and opened it 10 years later in 1910.
