during the morning hours, a battle was played in trenton, new jersey. after the crossing of delaware river last night by the patriotic troops headed by washington, early this morning, the main body of the continental army attacked hessian mercenaries and found them unprepared. after a short but fierce battle, two-thirds of the hessian army was captured, while one-third escaped across assunpink creek. the losses on the side of the american revolutionary army are insignificant. this battle greatly strengthened the moral strength of the continental army and inspired their re-engagement.
