Jesus says the disciples will have the Holy Spirit and the authority to forgive sins and to withhold forgiveness. In Acts, Jesus promises the disciples that the Holy Spirit will inspire them. John 3:16 is often quoted, but this does not diminish the fact that it contains the essential elements of God’s plan and the atonement: “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
God has reached out to us. Christ has died for us. Christ lives again for us. We need only accept God’s grace humbly through Christ, turn away from the wrongs we have done, and receive Christ as our Lord and Savior. Then we are ready for the first steps in the Christian life.
