Problem of the Week
Band T-Shirts
The Music Boosters, a group of parents who help with the band program, want to buy t-shirts for
everyone in the 8th grade music program at Johnson Middle School. The Boosters have $435
from fundraising. They contact Shirts-R-Us to find that there is a one time setup fee of $56 and
every shirt will cost $9.25 (including tax). There are 52 students who will be receiving band
shirts. Will the Boosters have enough money for their shirts? Please explain your reasoning. If
not, at what price do they need to negotiate per shirt in order to purchase it for every student
(hint: write an equation)?

If this figure is symmetric (as it seems to be) then is invariant to rotations of 90° in the plane where the center of each segment coincides with an axis, and when the axis of rotation is on the center of the figure.
So the rotation of 0°, the rotation of 90° and the rotation of 180° are possible solutions.
Here 180° because if you rotate the figure by 90° two times, you get 180°.
