Social Phobia is marked by a persistent fear of being negatively evaluated by others. Symptoms include blushing, pounding heart, trembling sweating and shortness of breath. Individuals with social phobia have an increased propensity for abusing alcohol. Suzanne Thomas was interested in how alcoholics with social phobia compared to alcoholics without social phobia. She matched alcoholics without social phobia to those with social phobia on several variables, including age and gender.
