In my brain, I divide the run into three parts (because the fraction has a base of three). If I ran two parts of those three in eight minutes, then to find the amount of time it took to run one part (cause that's how much we need to add), I need to divide the time by two, and then add it to the 8 minutes. When the math is done, a third of a mile can be ran in 4 minutes, which means that an entire mile can be ran in 12 minutes.
