The first modern equivalent of numeral zero comes from a Hindu astronomer and mathematician Brahmagupta in 628. But it was anything until Al-Khwarizmi gave it a value, making it a double of ten, thus achieving the places of tens, hundreds, thousands..etc.  The German "Learn Helper" website stated that the civilization of the Mayan tribes that flourished in South America also used the concept of zero, as the Mayan civilization used the twentieth system depending on the numbers of fingers and toes in the body. The month in the Mayan calendar always began with day zero.
