You and a friend have some pvc pipes of various lengths and a hacksaw. You select a very long pipe that is open at both ends but your friend chooses a shorter pipe that is closed at one end. You want to cut your open pipe to a length that makes its no = 2 harmonic the same frequency as the closed-at-one-end pipe’s nc = 3 harmonic. If your friend’s pipe is 60 cm long, how long should you make your pipe? For the representation, draw a standing wave, then draw an open-at-both-ends pipe above the wave that is long enough to have the no= 2 harmonic wavelength match the standing wave’s wavelength and below the wave draw a closed-at-one-end pipe that is long enough to have the nc= 3 harmonic wavelength match the standing wave’s wavelength.
