This was Christof's response to the interviewer’s question “Why has Truman never come close to discovering the true nature of the world?". Truman, despite his attempts, had a part of him still accepting the life he was in and gave in. He was in a state where a part of him had the curiosity to find the other side whereas the other part of him dominated by the fear of losing a secured life. It was only later you could find Truman truly fighting and not giving up until he finds the other side.
Christof, by talking to the fourth wall, talks to us on how we accept the reality around us. We all have a part of us wanting to have moment(s) of life we've dreamt of but we never fought for it enough. We accept the life given to us by the society without making enough attempts to change it for ourselves.
We are all shaped by the culture in which we were raised. This is what is so intriguing about TTS. It illustrates how media, schooling, advertising, parents, family, captured narratives of our childhood, etc. all collude to shape who it is we think we are. What makes TTS so difficult to forget is that it soundly and thoroughly illustrates (without being pedantic) what Louis Althusser writes in “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” (1970). The Matrix, V, and other similar conspiracy films go only half the distance in trying to articulate this idea before they descend into fantasy. For TTS, only the final two-minutes is fantasy and easily ignored. TTS is underrated in many respects. It is also very interesting to read the original screenplay, which had to be rewritten about twelve times because it was construed as too dark, violent, and pessimistic.
