A national icon is someone who, by the mere mention of their name, will remind people of their country. Icons are representatives of their nation to the rest of the world. In this sense, the three american icons selected for developing this Project are George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King. As it is described below, each of them left a great heritage for the United State of America and for the rest of the world.
George Washington (1732-1799)
In 1789 Washington became the first president of the United States. Even during his life time Washington was labelled ‘father of his country’. He was the first man in the US history that privately opposed slavery.
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)
Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. During his time as president he led the United States through the American Civil war, helped preserve the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the national government and modernised the economy.
Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
Luther King was an American activist, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights in a non-violent manner and became in a national icon in the history of American progressivism. His assassination in 1968 led to a wave of race riots across America.
