Ihave a problem with this. i just started taking japanese classes (if anyone knows japanese) and a question on my test is "what's your name? " in japanese. i know what i is in japanese but not the japanese characters. if anyone knows, say? in japanese (forgive me if my grammar is wrong) "what's your name? " is: watashi no namae wa nan desu ka?

Watashi= わたし (私)
Watashi no namae wa nan desu ka? Would be asking “what is my name” so to ask the question “what is your name” in Japanese you would change Watashi with Anata (あなた) making the Japanese character version あなたのなまえわなんですか？

Explanation:

There's a few ways to say this:

My name is __ Formal: Watashi no namae wa ___ desu.  (私の名前は__です.)

My name is __ Casual: Namae wa ___ desu.  (名前は__です)

I'm __: Watashi wa ___ desu (私は___です)

Any of these is fine but the third one is more common!

My (watashi): 私

Name (namae): 名前
